Q: What is the best way to clean my bird feeders? And how often should I do it?

A: The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says regular bird feeder cleaning should be part of your annual to do list to avoid unintentionally spreading disease among birds that frequent these feeders. Bird feeders and waterers should be cleaned with a 10% bleach solution about once each month. The DNR says to also be sure the feeder is dry before refilling it with seed. Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned every three to five days with hot water and dish soap or with the 10% bleach solution and rinsed thoroughly. Bird baths should get fresh water and a good scrub at least once per week. The DNR recommends wearing rubber gloves while cleaning the feeders, as humans can contract some diseases, such as those caused by some Salmonella bacteria, from affected feeders or sick birds. If people do find sick birds at their feeders, they should take the feeders down for at least two weeks to help stop the spread of disease and contact the DNR.

Q: I heard about a “Back to the 1980s” promotion that is coming up in Panora. What is it?

A: The Panora Chamber of Commerce will be having a “Back to the 80s” event that will be held on Friday, May 23 from 4-7 p.m. Participating stores will be offering small prize drawings. Customers can receive one entry by wearing a 1980s costume and two entries with any purchase.

The chamber encourages customers to post pictures from the event on the Panora Chamber Facebook page, as well as any participating business pages. Businesses may enhance the experience by serving their favorite nostalgic 1980s drinks or candies and playing 1980s music in their stores.

Q: I read the cribbage results in the Times Vedette each issue. I don’t know how to play but would like to learn. Can I join in?

A: Yes. The cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library at 8 a.m. on Mondays, at the New Homestead independent living rec room at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays, and at the Guthrie Center Activity Center at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday.
