Q: I am going to be digging up some plants in my yard this fall. Do I need to call utilities?  And how much notice do I need to give them?

Q: Can I burn leaves on my property?

A: If the leaves came from trees on your property, the answer is yes. Keep in mind that only items that grow on a lot can be burned on that lot. No construction debris, trash, garbage or other materials are to be burned on a person’s property. Also, no burning is allowed on the street, in roadside ditches or in drainages. Burning must be supervised and considerate of wind and conditions.

Q: What are these “caltrops” that I heard the Sheriff warning people about?

A: A caltrop is a spiked device typically made of metal that is designed to impede the movement of vehicles by puncturing tires. Historically used in warfare, caltrops have four spikes arranged so that one always points upward. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning due to an increase in motor vehicle flat tires caused by caltrops apparently being placed on roadways. Anyone who experiences this or has knowledge of the situation is asked to contact the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Department at 641-747-2214.
