On March 5, a late season ice and snow storm moved through Iowa, dumping several inches of snow at Lake Panorama. High winds whipped the snow into large drifts. Schools were cancelled, businesses closed, and authorities begged people to stay home.

Throughout the day, Eastern bluebirds gathered at feeders near Scott and Trish Hart’s Lake Panorama home while Trish snapped photos. One male, in particular, caught her eye.

“I thought this one summed up how we were all feeling about the blizzard,” she says.

The phrase “ruffle someone’s feathers” is a common expression used to describe a situation where someone is annoyed, irritated or upset. The phrase’s origin is believed to be related to the behavior of birds. When birds are agitated or threatened, they often will ruffle their feathers as a way of making themselves look bigger and more intimidating.

Clearly, this guy has the “ruffled feathers” technique down pat.
