Fox squirrels are the most common squirrel seen in the Lake Panorama community, named because of their coloration similar to red foxes.
Squirrel paws are hand-like with little thumbs and strong claws. These paws, combined with hind feet that can rotate 180 degrees, make it possible for squirrels to descend head-first from a tree. These paws also are the reason squirrels often find a way to steal food from birdfeeders.
This past May Day, photographer Trish Hart snapped photos of a fox squirrel perched on the deck railing of the home she and her husband, Scott, own in Andrew’s Cove. She continued to take pictures as this persistent squirrel eventually reached its goal — the birdfeeder filled sunflower seeds and assorted fruit and nut blend seeds.
“Seed blends normally attract a wide variety of birds, such as cardinals, blue jays, chickadees, nut hatches and woodpeckers, but squirrels love this, too,” Hart says. “Rather than trying to find a way to stop squirrels from this feeder, we actually welcome them since it provides nonstop entertainment for our cat, Godfrey. They routinely face off at the deck door.”
Hart offers custom prints of her photos on canvas, paper, metal and glass. Learn more by visiting Nature’s Canvas Photography on Facebook.
